Boac, Marinduque, Philippines — Marinduque State University, through Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension and Training (OVPRET) and the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office (KTTO) under the RAISE Program Phase II opened the Prior Art Search and Patent Drafting Training-Workshop on December 10, 2025 at the Old OP Conference Room. The workshop brings together research coordinators from various colleges, OVPRET personnel, and project staff involved in MarSU’s R&D and IP generation initiatives.
Dr. Ma. Edelwina M. Blase, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training, delivered her welcome remarks, highlighting the importance of strengthening MarSU’s capability in evaluating the novelty of research outputs and protecting homegrown innovations. Engr. Ana Fe N. Molato, Project Leader of RAISE II IP-TBM presented the program overview, highlighting that the workshop’s two essential components of the patenting process: prior art search and patent drafting. These skills enable researchers to evaluate the novelty of an invention and translate innovative ideas into clear, complete, and enforceable patent applications.
In the morning sessions, Engr. Edgardo R. Laririt, KTTO Director and Engr. Bryan B. Jaranilla, College of Engineering Research Coordinator discussed the foundations of patents and the role of prior art in determining an invention’s originality and patentability.
Participants also engaged in hands-on activities, including navigating global patent databases, analyzing search results, and assessing whether an idea offers inventive steps beyond existing technologies.
The afternoon continues with practical prior art search exercises, ahead of tomorrow’s Day 2 sessions on drafting claims, peer review, and presenting mini patent applications.
